Changes in the second Payment Services Directive

New rules on payments within EU/EES

On September 14, 2019, the Payment Services Act will be amended, implying greater security requirements for certain types of payments within the EU. The changes have been made to reduce fraud, and in some cases it may affect the card payments on First Card.

Card payments in stores

In physical commerce, the following card payments within the EU will be rejected:

  • Chip and signature
  • Chip without a PIN (mainly vending machines if they do not have contactless function)
  • Magnetic strip payments

Card payments in eCommerce

There are no changes to online payments. The Danish FSA has chosen to allow an extended period to implement the new rules on strong customer authentication in Denmark. The extension only applies to card payments on the Internet.
